Climbing Through: A Courageous Story of Grit, Healing, and Second Chances

Just outside the main entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, Melissa Strong was preparing to open Bird & Jim, a "mountain chic" restaurant in Estes Park, Colorado, when life took an unexpected turn. Between bouldering sessions in the park with her husband--a fellow sponsored rock climber--and a full building renovation timed

for the busy summer tourist season, Strong was about to unveil the culmination of years of planning and passion. On April 2nd, 2017, while adding custom woodworking details to the restaurant's dining tables, she suffered a tragic electrocution accident, resulting in partial hand loss and a grueling recovery.
In her memoir Climbing Through: A Courageous Story of Grit, Healing, and Second Chances, Strong chronicles her extraordinary journey from the heights of a climbing life to a life-altering accident--and her determined climb back to purpose, joy, and the rocks that shaped her. Along the way, she reflects on her entrepreneurial path, from conceptualizing and launching Bird & Jim to building a business while pursuing her passion for climbing. She shows how grit, creativity, and perseverance can help overcome even the toughest obstacles.

About the Author

Melissa Strong is a rock climber and restauranteur based in Estes Park, Colorado, and El Paso, Texas. She and her husband own Wagon Wheel Co-opt, a guiding concession in Hueco Tanks State Park. She is the founder and owner of two acclaimed restaurants in Estes Park, Bird & Jim and The Bird's Nest. A sponsored climber, Strong has traveled the world pursuing her passion while inspiring others through speaking engagements,
