FINDING THE WAY

In 1250AD, in an isolated village at the foot of the Pyrenees, old Basque folk traditions are on a collision course with the onslaught of Christianity. One night, Amika, a young woman on the brink of adulthood, is awoken by an angry mob hunting down "heretics." Amika witnesses her mother, an herbal healer, being dragged off to her fiery death. Amika flees to the forest in terror. With the help of rescuers from both the old and the new traditions, she sets off upon her journey of self-discovery along the Camino de Santiago, Spain. Along the way Amika encounters danger, hardship and fear before she meets the man and child with whom she will share her future.

ESPERANZA'S WAY

Motivated by the memory of her mother dying in her arms, Esperanza resolves that she will one day walk the halls of the Scola Medica at Salerno and train to become a doctor. Fate brought Amika, a talented herbalist, into her life. She rescued the orphaned Esperanza and helped her take her first steps toward gaining the knowledge that would fulfill her dream. Unfortunately, a tragic accident forced Esperanza to flee Amika's home. Her journey toward finding the path to success is littered with stumbling blocks, some more difficult to avoid than she expected. Relying on her strength and resilience, Esperanza manages to find her way.

AUTHOR BIO

Cindy Maynard’s love of history, the natural world, and her insatiable curiosity come through loud and clear in her writing. Her characters come to life leading the reader to imagine what it was like to live in another time and place. Her most recent books, Finding the Way, and Esperanza's Way were inspired by her 500-mile trek across northern Spain along the Camino de Santiago. Cindy’s previous work, Soyala: Daughter of the Desert, won the Colorado Authors League award for Western literature, and WILLA Finalist Award, weaves a compelling, dramatic story based on the pre-history of the desert Southwest. Her debut novel, Anastasia's Book of Days, winner of the Marie M. Irvine award for Literary Excellence, is based on the purported diaries of the author's great-great grandmother. The story reflects the momentous changes sweeping across her beloved Black Forest homeland at the start of the nineteenth century. When not researching and writing Cindy can be found wandering the trails around Boulder CO, singing in her chorus, and volunteering for environmental organizations.
